Facilities in Department of Physics

UGC Instrument Maintenance Facility:
With the support of UGC, an IMF centre is operative in the department to look after maintenance of sophisticated electronic and computer based equipment. Students of M.Sc Physics and Electronics are also trained using these facilities.

University Internet Centre:
University Internet Centre has been established in the department of physics to design, install and maintain Sukhadia university network of computers to provide Internet and Intranet facilities to students and faculty members. Internet access to the campus is provided through a 2 Mbps lease line and 2 Mbps BSNL broad band. Internet facilities are available in all research and post graduate laboratories, departmental library and rooms of faculty members. Students are provided with free Internet accounts to access educational resources. Access to full text of all major research journals are also available free of charge from the computer network installed in the department. For more details contact Dr. K. Venugopalan, Coordinator of University Internet Centre.

Computational and Graphics Laboratory:
Department has excellent computing facilities to cater to the computing requirement of various research groups and training of post graduate students. SGI Octane Computer System, Compaq and Wipro-make Pentium 4 based Servers, Alpha Workstations and more than 20 Pentium 4 computers are available in the central computational laboratory of the department.

X-ray Diffraction facility:
Rigaku Model X-ray powder diffractometer is installed in the department as a central facility for characterization of various alloys, crystals and compounds synthesized by various research groups. This facility is used by M.Sc. students for experiments and project work and is also extended to other departments and institutions. For more details contact Dr. N. Lakshmi, Associate Professor in Physics.

Thin Film Laboratory:
A thin film laboratory equipped with electron beam gun and closed cycle refrigerator is available for carrying out preparation of thin films, study of transport properties etc.

Vibration Sample Magnetometer (VSM) facility:
A Lakeshore make Model 7403 VSM facility is available under the DST-FIST program. This magnetometer is equipped with low temperature CCR and high temperature oven for measurements in the range of 10K- 1000K. This research facility is used by other departments and institutions and is also used by PG students special paper experiments and project work. For more details contact Dr. K. Venugopalan, Professor in Physics

Library Facilities:
Students and Faculty members of the Department can avail library facilities from following libraries

  • Physics Student Library
  • Departmental Library
  • College Library
  • University Central Library

All students admitted to the University are also eligible to get text books required fro the course from the Book Bank operative in the University College Library. In addition to books and Journals, a Digital Library and Internet Access facilities are also available in the college and Departmental libraries. Photocopier and Network Printing facilities are also open to students and faculty members.
